U-Boat watches are known for their striking cases, large crowns on the left side of the case, and breathtakingly complex dials that captivate all who are lucky enough to see them. They are very different from most ordinary luxury watches, with simple designs, no excessive complications, and a focus on high-quality manufacturing, conveying a sense of discerning taste, confidence and strength. The U-Boat brand has a fascinating story that began in 1942. At that time, Ilvo Fontana, a skilled craftsman of precision engineering instruments, was commissioned by the Italian Navy to design and build a watch for its naval pilots. The watch had to follow a very precise set of technical specifications while ensuring the highest reliability and legibility in all light and weather conditions. However, due to the context of the times, the project was not realized. In 2000, Ivo's grandson Italo Fontana came across these designs and decided to use them as inspiration to create the first U-Boat watch.
Since then, Italo Fontana has lovingly designed every U-Boat watch that hits the market, giving them an instantly recognisable personality that can be spotted from metres away. Every U-Boat watch is designed and manufactured at the brand’s headquarters in Lucca, Tuscany. With Swiss-made movements and unique craftsmanship and materials, a U-Boat watch cannot be ignored. Let’s take a closer look at all the latest U-Boat watch collections…
U-Boat Chimera Watches The U-Boat Chimera watch collection is named after a fire-breathing hybrid creature from Greek mythology that was made up of various animal parts. The watches are beautifully crafted in a variety of materials including mother-of-pearl, bronze, titanium and laser-cut filaments.
Another notable feature of the U-Boat Chimera watch is the case with a unique crown cover, with a pusher on the left side for easy operation. The case is also locked together by external tubing on the bezel and case back to ensure complete water resistance. We really like the U-Boat Chimera Net watch, which has a four-layered skeletonised dial. The final layer is meticulously crafted from a fine, laser-cut stainless steel mesh, revealing the intricate mechanical movement beneath.
