Surprise in silicon: Ulysse Nardin surprises with Blast Free Wheel marquetry at GWD 2023
Ulysse Nardin once again surprised with technological innovation and bold design by launching the new Blast Free Wheel Marquetry inlay technology, using silicon as a material that is not only ultra-technical but also highly artistic. In homage to the iconic Freak movement, which was first made of silicon in 2001, the UN-176 in-house movement also showcases its wheels, a flying tourbillon with Ulysse Anchor Constant Escapement on the face of the watch, which has won the Tourbillon At the 2015 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, the barrel and 7-day power reserve show that everything seems to fly on this impressive mosaic masterpiece, without any visible attachments.
Ulysse Nardin has launched several limited edition Freak Xs since 2019, adorned with colored silicon-inlaid discs, but this craftsmanship is reflected in the Blast collection for the first time. 103 radiant blue appliques adorn the dial of this masterpiece, transforming it into a fascinating work of art.
Their changing reflections and contrasts emphasize three-dimensionality in a mesmerizing way, thanks to the variation of micron-precise matte and mirror-polished surfaces and the use of two different thicknesses (0.30 and 0.35 mm).
It goes without saying that assembling the small silicon wafers to adorn individual dials takes hours of work by artisans who must display incredible dexterity to avoid damaging or leaving marks on these extremely fragile jewels. In addition, the case back of the Blast Free Wheel Marquetry watch is embellished with blue silicon plate for the first time, proving that the use of this high-end material has been raised to a new level.
The beauty of this unconventional timepiece is reflected in the 45mm white gold Blast case, whose negative-angle facets have been designed using a complex laser method, which is another achievement. Known for its disruptive aesthetic and ergonomic properties, the case once again demonstrates the cutting-edge technology of the independent manufacturer. Its geometric lines perfectly echo the marquetry pattern, and its ultra-glass case offers a wide view of the mysterious movement, also visible from the side.
