SAN FRANCISCO -- The Washington Nationals made history by turning the first 3-3-5 triple play ever in the major leagues then watched as third baseman Anthony Rendon tossed the ball from the milestone moment into the crowd at AT&T Park.Getting a second straight win over the Giants and securing their hold on the second-best record in baseball was far more important than the souvenir to manager Dusty Baker and his ballclub.Washington turned the first triple play in its 12-season history, holding on in the eighth inning to help preserve a strong outing by Max Scherzer and beat San Francisco 4-1 on Friday night.Crazy, Zimmerman said. Couldnt have happened at a better time for us. Great job by Sammy (Solis) coming in and getting two pitches and three outs. The Giants loaded the bases in the eighth with two walks sandwiched around a single. Brandon Crawford then lined an 0-1 pitch from Sammy Solis to first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who had entered the game moments earlier as a part of a double switch.Zimmerman quickly stepped on first base for the second out then threw to third baseman Anthony Rendon to catch Denard Span to complete the triple play.Once I caught it I knew I had the double play, said Zimmerman, who was moved a few steps back before Crawford swung. Then Tony was jumping up and down with a smile on his face so I just tossed the ball over to him. Got out of a jam just like that.It was the first 3-3-5 triple play in history, according to Sabr.org, and alos the first Baker has ever seen as a player or manager. There was one other one but I went to the bathroom and missed it, Baker said.Scherzer (11-6) had lost four of his five career starts against the Giants and a no-decision in Game 4 of the 2012 World Series before holding San Francisco to one run over seven innings. The four-time All-Star retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced and finished with six strikeouts and two walks.Over his last six starts Scherzer has allowed just five earned runs in 41 1/3 innings.Once we got that lead he knows how to smell the finish line, Baker said. Max was awesome.Four relievers combined to retire eight batters.Four players had two hits apiece for the Giants. San Francisco fell to 2-11 since the All-Star break.San Francisco put two runners on base in the ninth but Shawn Kelly struck out Eduardo Nunez -- making his Giants debut -- for his sixth save. Were just having a hard time getting runners in, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. Its a tough go but you have to be big boys and come out here and put your big boy pants on and keep fighting. Thats all you can do.Jayson Werth had two hits for the Nationals to extend his on-base streak to 32 games, tied with Bostons Dustin Pedroia for the longest active streak in the majors, and Ben Revere hit a tiebreaking single in the fifth.Daniel Murphy added an RBI triple while Wilson Ramos doubled and scored to help the Nationals win their second straight in this four-game series between division leaders. All of Washingtons runs came off Giants starter Jeff Samardzija (9-7).FAN CHARGES FIELDThe game was interrupted in the top of the seventh inning when a fan ran onto the field. The man avoided security guards for a few moments then dropped to one knee near Giants SS Crawford before being tackled and escorted away.TRAINER S ROOMNationals: Backup C Jose Lobaton was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow tendinitis. BERN, Switzerland -- As the Tour de France heads toward the Alps, Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde have only a few opportunities left to try and derail Chris Froomes bid for a third title in four years. The remaining three high-mountain stages and uphill time trial should be the ideal playground for the Movistar teammates, who need to abandon their conservative approach and take all risks to make up for the big chunk of time they have lost.Quintana, runner-up to Froome in 2013 and 2015, is in fourth place overall, 2 minutes, 59 seconds behind. Valverde is 18 more seconds behind his teammate. The gaps are significant, but Quintana, a pure climber from Colombia, managed to gain time on Froome in the Alps last year. His subdued performance at the Mont Ventoux and his unimpressive time trial last week have, however, raised doubts about his ability to make a comeback.Even his team manager, Eusebio Unzue, admits Quintana is not at his best.We did not see the Nairo we know at the Mont Ventoux. Hopefully, things will return to normal in the Alps, he said.Unzue has been vainly scratching his head to find the winning formula that will allow his riders to crack Team Skys supremacy. While many observers have been struggling to understand why Quintana and Valverde have not harassed Froome with relentless attacks in the Pyrenees and the Jura mountains, Unzue says his cautious approach was right.Attacking all the time would be good for the show. But its unrealistic and not a guarantee for success, Unzue said. We need to wait for the right time, for the moment that will allow us to be efficient when we make a move.Valverde agreed with his boss, saying Quintana has to try it when he considers he can hurt his competitors.Encouraging for Movisar is that Froome has not been as dominant on the mountains as he has on previous Tours.Froome would normally use the first mountaintop finish to assert his authority on the race, something he has not been able to do this year.dddddddddddd Instead, hes built his lead with an impressive showing against the clock combined with master tactical coups in the Peyresourde downhill and the crosswinds near Montpellier.I believe that Froome and his rivals are more or less on the same level in the mountains this year, Unzue said. In Andorra and at the Ventoux, he did not attack to create gaps, I believe that he is not as strong as he was before. The problem is more that he has a team capable of controlling the race in delicate situations.Despite claims in French newspapers that Froome has no rival this year, he is certain he will be given a hard challenge in the Alps, where he struggled with a chest infection and lost nearly two minutes to Quintana last year. As a result, he has slightly changed his preparation to be in a better shape in the final week of racing.I feel more ready for the third week than I have been previously, said Froome, who has a 1:47 lead over his closest rival, Dutch rider Bauke Mollema. Starting the season later helped, and I had a quieter run-in to the Tour. I said at the beginning of the race I wanted to be at my best in the third week and Im on track for that.Wednesdays first Alpine stage takes the peloton on a 184.5-kilometer ride to the ski resort of Finhaut-Emosson, and features a punishing 10-kilometer final climb to the finish. It will be followed by an uphill time trial and two more grueling stages in high altitude before the ceremonial finish on the Champs Elysees.I feel as if Ive been waiting for these four days, Froome said. Perhaps some other riders have, too.
