Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon admits there had been dark times when he despaired his club would never make it to an AFL grand final.Gordon had to fight tooth and nail to keep the wolves at bay during his first stint as president - from 1989-96 - of the then financially crippled club. And as he soaks up the clubs first grand-final week since 1961, Gordon cant help but cast his mind back to how the Dogs had arrived there. What I love about it is the struggle ... its just a story that if you keep pushing hard enough, then finally the door breaks down, Gordon said.(The club) was in receivership (in 1989) and it was days away from being wound up. The VFL had plans to raffle off our players to various other clubs ... it was closer to extinction than any other club that has survived has ever been. And its not the only time. In 1996, we had our struggles and I know that in the 16 years of David Smorgons presidency before I came back, there were various moments when the sheriff was nearly at the door. Its been a history of struggle, the Bulldogs embody struggle, and I guess the moral to the story is if you continue to struggle and you continue to believe, then eventually a week like this will come along.I hope Bulldogs supporters are further rewarded on the weekend.Gordon has been a constant presence at the club this week, chatting with fans and watching the team train during breaks from official business.Hes been thrilled with the number of members, supporters and past players who have come down to Whitten Oval to experience the grand-final week atmosphere. The club remains unsure exactly how great a financial windfall the grand-final appearance will provide but, whatever it is, the days when that might be the difference between survival and extinction are long gone. Its 2016 and we are not the club that, back in 1989, was fighting for survival, Gordon said.Weve broken a lot of records this year ... 40,000 members would have been a dream for me when I first became president in 1989 and we had 4000 members.Weve broken records in revenue, were going to declare a healthy profit this year and well be able to invest back into Whitten Oval.As someone whos been involved in it for such a long time and seen so many people work so hard ... this is the realisation of a dream. Cheap NBA Jerseys . PETERSBURG, Fla. RIO DE JANEIRO -- The head of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics says the worlds top four male golfers have withdrawn from the games because there is no money to be won -- not because of the Zika virus. They tried to blame Zika, but the media have shown that they are not coming because theres no prize money, Rio organizing committee President Carlos Nuzman said Saturday, speaking with the games set to open in just under three weeks.Jordan Spieth withdrew this week from the Olympics, citing Zika. He joined Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, and Rory McIlroy in also saying Zika was the main reason for skipping the first Olympic golf tournament in 112 years.Their absence could be a setback for golfs future in the Olympics. IOC President Thomas Bach has said that golfs future may rest on its ability to get top players to show up.Golf is guaranteed a spot in the Tokyo Olympics in four years, but could be vulnerable after that.Zika is much worse in Florida than in Brazil, and golfers are playing in Florida, Nuzman said.Male golfers have also cited security worries, and some have complained that Olympic golf has been wedged into an already crowded tour schedule.Rio has myriad Olympic problems: Zika, security concerns, severe water pollution and sluggish ticket sales.Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes warned in the wake of the attack Thuursday in Nice, France, that fans in Rio could face more checks, more roadblocks and more delays.dddddddddddd.Probably the security forces are going to demand more blockades, more inconvenient things, Paes said.Nuzman, speaking at a debate sponsored by a local magazine, seemed to be bracing for small crowds at some Olympic venues. Organizers says about 70 percent of tickets have been sold.I dont think we need too much public, he said, adding that smaller venues could save money.Television does an extraordinary job, with cameras everywhere, he added. Nobody can walk a step without a camera filming it.Nuzman also said he expected Rios suspended drug-testing lab to be ready when the games open Aug. 5. He expected the World Anti-Doping Agency to give its approval in a few days. The suspension has been an embarrassment for local organizers and a headache for the International Olympic Committee, which could be forced to send blood and urine samples abroad for testing if the lab remains closed.---SNTV producer Filipe de Almeida contributed to this report.---Stephen Wade on Twitter: http://twitter.com/StephenWadeAP .His work can be found at http://bigstory.ap.org/content/stephen-wade ' ' '
